OpenAI CEO Sam Altman kicked off a heated online discussion over the weekend when he suggested that parents use ChatGPT Work to create daily personalized podcasts for their children during the morning drive to school. In a post describing what he called a "cool use case," Altman proposed connecting family calendars and kids' personal interests to the app, letting the AI generate audio summaries that cover upcoming soccer games, birthdays, and current events.
The idea, meant to make mornings more engaging and informative, quickly drew mixed reactions. Many parents and educators pushed back, arguing that children need human interaction and unstructured conversation more than they need algorithm-generated content. Critics said the suggestion misses the point of car time, which for many families is one of the few quiet moments to talk, listen, and connect without screens.
Some commenters told Altman to "do better," pointing out that outsourcing parenting duties to AI could have unintended effects on child development and family bonding. Others, however, saw the value in the tool, noting that it could help busy parents keep kids informed and excited about their day.
Altman has not responded to the backlash yet, but the debate highlights growing concerns about how quickly AI is being woven into everyday family life.
