Rethinking Family Tech Habits Begins With a Look in the Mirror

Rethinking Family Tech Habits Begins With a Look in the Mirror

Author and speaker Arlene Pellicane wants parents to ask one uncomfortable question before they start policing their children's screen time: how much of the problem starts with them?

Pellicane, who has written extensively on parenting and digital culture, argues that most families approach screen time backwards. Parents set rules for their kids while quietly breaking those same rules themselves, and children notice the gap long before they obey the lecture. The result is a household where limits exist on paper but not in practice.

Her advice is straightforward. Before confiscating a phone or installing a timer app, parents should track their own usage for a week. The numbers are often humbling. Many adults spend hours each day scrolling, answering messages at dinner, and checking notifications during conversations, all while telling children to put devices away.

Pellicane suggests a few practical steps. Designate device free zones in the home, such as the dinner table and bedrooms. Charge phones outside the bedroom overnight. Replace passive scrolling with shared activities, including board games, walks, or reading together. Model the behavior you want to see, because children learn far more from what parents do than from what they say.

She also encourages families to talk openly about why limits matter rather than simply imposing them. Explain that sleep, attention, and relationships suffer when screens crowd them out. Invite children into the conversation and let them help shape the rules.

The core message is simple. Resetting a family's tech habits does not begin with stricter rules for kids. It begins with honest self examination by the adults in the room.
