Why the Backlash Against Marissa Mayer's AI Use Misses the Point

Marissa Mayer has found herself at the center of a heated debate over her use of artificial intelligence, and much of the criticism appears to be aimed at the wrong target. The former Yahoo chief executive recently described how she uses AI tools in her daily work, and the reaction was swift and largely hostile. One supporter cut through the noise with a blunt observation: "The hate is coming from woman."

That remark points to a pattern that is hard to ignore. When male executives tout their embrace of AI, they are often praised as forward thinking leaders who understand where technology is headed. When a woman in tech does the same thing, the response can shift quickly into suspicion, mockery, or accusations of laziness. Mayer's case fits that double standard almost perfectly.

The substance of her position is not particularly radical. She has argued that AI is a tool, one that professionals should learn to use rather than fear. That is a reasonable stance in an era when the technology is spreading through nearly every industry. Dismissing her perspective because of who is delivering it does little to advance the conversation.

Critics are free to disagree with Mayer on the details. But the intensity of the personal attacks suggests something other than a good faith debate about AI.
