A millennial mother has sparked a heated online debate after calling out what she describes as "absent boomer" grandparents who prioritize vacations over spending time with their grandchildren. The woman, who shared her frustrations on social media, claimed her own parents frequently travel for leisure but refuse to make a short 10-minute drive to visit her and her children.
"I am not asking for daily babysitting or financial help," she wrote. "I am asking for a relationship. They will book a two-week cruise without a second thought, but driving across town to see their grandkids is apparently too much effort." Her post resonated with many other parents who reported similar experiences of grandparents who seem disengaged or unwilling to invest time in family bonds.
The complaint taps into a broader generational tension. Many boomers, now in their 60s and 70s, are enjoying active retirements filled with travel, hobbies, and social lives. Some feel they have already raised their children and are not obligated to take on regular grandparent duties. Others cite health issues, fatigue, or simply a desire for independence.
Critics of the mom's post argue that grandparents are not automatic free childcare and that relationships should be built on mutual effort, not guilt. "You cannot demand a bond," one commenter noted. "If you want them involved, meet them halfway."
Still, the mother insists the issue is not about free labor but about emotional presence. She says her children notice the absence and ask why grandma and grandpa never come over. For her, the hurt is not about the vacations, but about the message those choices send: that a few minutes of driving is too high a price for connection.
