In our well-intentioned efforts to equip children with tools for emotional regulation, a crucial question is emerging: are we sometimes asking for more than their developing brains are ready to handle? The constant push to teach structured coping skills—like deep breathing or naming feelings—can inadvertently send the message that calm is a state to be achieved through effort and performance, rather than a natural capacity.
Experts point to a simpler, often overlooked foundation: co-regulation. Before a child can self-soothe, they need to consistently experience being soothed by a trusted adult. This isn't about executing a perfect technique, but about the safety found in a quiet, patient presence. A hug, sitting together in silence, or a steadying hand on the shoulder can regulate a child's nervous system more effectively than a command to "use your breathing."
This shift in perspective emphasizes that calm is often a gift of connection, not just a skill to be practiced. It relieves children (and adults) of the pressure to "get it right" when overwhelmed. Sometimes, the most powerful intervention is not an intervention at all, but a shared, quiet moment that allows a young nervous system to borrow stability and simply find its way back to baseline, naturally and without instruction.
