As summer winds down, many families are already feeling the pressure of the new school year. Between new teachers, heavier homework loads, and social worries, kids can easily become overwhelmed. Reem Raouda, a parenting coach based in Manalapan, recently sat down to talk about practical ways parents can help their children manage this transition without burning out.
Raouda says the key is to start small and early. Instead of waiting until the night before the first day, she suggests having open conversations about feelings a week or two ahead. Ask your child what they are excited about, but also what is making them nervous. This simple check-in can make a big difference. She also recommends getting back into a routine gradually, like adjusting bedtimes and wake-up calls a few days in advance, so the shock of the early alarm is less jarring.
Another big piece of advice is to watch for physical signs of stress. Complaints like stomachaches, headaches, or sudden irritability can be red flags. When that happens, Raouda advises parents to stop and listen rather than jump into problem-solving mode. Sometimes kids just need to feel heard. She also encourages parents to model calm behavior. If you are rushing and panicking about school supplies and schedules, your child will pick up on that energy.
Finally, she reminds parents that it is okay to let kids struggle a little. Solving every problem for them can actually make anxiety worse. Instead, guide them to come up with their own solutions. This builds confidence and resilience. With a little patience and a lot of listening, the back-to-school season can feel less like a storm and more like a steady breeze.
