When visitors enter the home, many children instinctively retreat. Parents often label this behaviour as shyness and either apologize for it or push the child to perform socially. Psychologists suggest this interpretation misses what is actually happening. The child is not necessarily afraid of people. They may simply need time to observe before engaging.

Social situations demand a complex set of skills. A child must read facial expressions, interpret tone, decide how to respond and manage their own emotional state simultaneously. For young children, this processing takes longer. Being watched by unfamiliar adults adds pressure that can freeze their natural impulses.

The distinction matters because how parents respond shapes future behaviour. Forcing a child to hug someone or scold them for hiding can increase anxiety.
