Screen-free summer for kids: A guide for parents

Summer break often means a sudden shift from structured school days to endless hours at home. For many parents, the easiest way to fill that time is with tablets, phones, and televisions. But a growing number of families are choosing to dial back the digital noise. A screen-free or screen-light summer is not about banning technology entirely. It is about creating space for boredom, which is where creativity and problem-solving often begin.

The first step is to set clear, simple boundaries. Do not try to eliminate screens overnight. Instead, pick specific times when devices are allowed, such as after dinner or during a quiet hour in the afternoon. The rest of the day should be open for other activities. Stock up on basic supplies like craft paper, building blocks, and board games. A cardboard box and some markers can keep a child busy longer than any app.

Outdoor time is the natural enemy of screen time. Encourage unstructured play in the backyard or at a local park. A simple water hose or a bucket of chalk can provide hours of engagement. If your child complains of boredom, resist the urge to offer a digital solution. Let them sit with the feeling. Often, that quiet moment is the spark for a new game, a drawing, or a book.

Finally, lead by example. If you are scrolling through your phone while telling your child to put theirs down, the message gets lost. Use the summer to model your own screen-free habits. Read a physical book, work on a puzzle, or just sit and watch the clouds. When the whole family steps away from the glow of a screen, the summer feels longer, slower, and far more memorable.
