SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Many parents focus on setting rules and enforcing discipline, but a growing number of experts argue that the real key to a strong family bond is something deeper: aligning your daily actions with your own core values. Brittney Gonzalez from the Parenting Lab recently shared insights on how this shift in perspective can transform the relationship between parent and child.
Instead of reacting to a child's behavior with frustration or a pre-set punishment, Gonzalez suggests parents first ask themselves what they truly value. Is it honesty, kindness, resilience, or connection? When a parent models those values in their own behavior, children learn through observation rather than lecture. For example, a parent who values patience must practice it even when a toddler is having a meltdown. A parent who values respect must show it when they are angry.
This approach does not mean being permissive or letting go of boundaries. It means that the boundaries come from a place of principle, not just convenience. When a parent explains that a rule exists because it protects a shared value, like safety or fairness, the child is more likely to internalize the lesson. The result is a home where actions have meaning, and where both parent and child feel more understood and less like they are fighting against each other.
