Some of the best parenting advice I’ve ever received wasn’t intended as parenting advice. Nor did it come from a parent, a pediatrician, or a child-rearing manual. It came from a cartoonist, and it has fundamentally reshaped how I interact with my children.
The core idea is simple: never draw a line you are not prepared to ink. In the world of illustration, you sketch lightly, finding the form, before committing to the final, permanent mark. The parenting parallel is profound. How often do we issue a threat or a promise in the heat of the moment—a line drawn in the mental sand—only to realize we cannot, or should not, follow through? This rule forces clarity and intentionality. It means thinking before speaking, ensuring that your word is your bond.
This leads to the "Descendants Corollary." Your children are not just listening to your words; they are studying your actions, your consistency, and your integrity. The lines you ink become the boundaries of their world and the blueprint for their own character. Every enforced rule, every kept promise, is a dark, confident line they can rely on. Conversely, every empty threat erodes trust and muddies the picture you are trying to create together.
Parenting, like cartooning, is about creating something meaningful from a blank page. It requires a steady hand, a clear vision, and the courage to only commit to the lines that truly matter. The most lasting lessons are often found in the most unexpected places, reminding us that guidance on building a good human can come from the principles of building a good drawing.
