A Wilmington initiative is giving young mothers the support they need to finish school and move into stable careers. The Adolescent Parenting Program, run by Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, works with teen parents who are trying to balance schoolwork with the demands of raising a child.
The program offers more than encouragement. Participants receive help staying enrolled in school, guidance on planning for college or job training, and practical support with childcare and transportation. Staff members also connect the young mothers with community resources and teach them how to advocate for themselves and their children.
For many participants, the biggest obstacle is not ability but isolation. Teen mothers often feel judged or overlooked, and some have no one to turn to when they need advice. The program creates a space where they can talk openly with peers facing similar challenges and learn from mentors who understand their situation.
Organizers say the goal is long-term stability. A high school diploma is the first step, but the program also pushes participants toward higher education, vocational training, and jobs that pay enough to support a family. Young mothers who complete the program leave with a clearer plan for the future and a network they can rely on.
The effort reflects a broader push in the region to address the needs of young parents, who are less likely to graduate than their peers without children. By combining academic support with real-world help, the program aims to break the cycle of hardship that too often follows an early pregnancy.
