Why I'm Not Worried About My Kids Living in Big Cities

Why I'm Not Worried About My Kids Living in Big Cities

My children now live in places like New York and Chicago. Friends often ask if I lose sleep over it. The answer is no. I feel calm, and here is why.

I spent years teaching them independence. It was not a formal lesson plan. It was small, everyday choices. When they were young, I let them walk to the corner store alone. I made them order their own food at restaurants. I taught them how to read a map and how to ask for help. I showed them how to notice their surroundings without being paranoid.

By the time they left for college, they already knew how to handle a crowded subway, how to spot a bad neighborhood, and how to say no firmly. They learned to trust their gut. That gut feeling is more valuable than any alarm system or tracking app.

Living in a big city comes with real risks. But so does living anywhere. The real danger is raising a child who cannot think for themselves. I see parents who hover over every move. They call their adult kids five times a day. That does not create safety. It creates dependence.

My kids call me when they want to, not because they have to. They know I am here if they need advice. But they also know they can solve most problems on their own. That peace of mind is worth more than any worry.
