Dr. Sukhmani Gumber, a motherhood and wellness expert based in India, recently shared a list of five parenting habits she observed among European families that she wishes she could adopt. Her observations, posted on social media, have sparked a conversation about cultural differences in raising children.
First, Gumber noticed that European parents rarely use strollers for toddlers who can walk. Instead, children are encouraged to walk on their own, even for short distances, which builds independence and stamina. Second, she admired how parents allow kids to play in the rain and mud without immediate concern for mess or illness. This freedom, she argues, helps children connect with nature and develop stronger immune systems.
Third, European parents often let their children eat with their hands or make a mess during meals, focusing on the experience rather than perfection. Fourth, they prioritize outdoor time over structured indoor activities, letting kids run, climb, and explore without constant supervision. Finally, Gumber highlighted the European approach to bedtime: parents do not rush to soothe every cry or wake-up, teaching children to self-settle.
While she acknowledges that these habits may not fit every culture or family, Gumber believes they offer valuable lessons in fostering resilience and joy in childhood.
