We took a cruise in Europe while our kids were at camp; hard at first

We took a cruise in Europe while our kids were at camp; hard at first

When the twins left for summer camp this year, my wife and I did something we had never done before. We booked a cruise through the Mediterranean and went without them. For the first two days, it felt wrong. We kept looking at our phones, checking for messages that never came. The quiet was loud. The empty seats at dinner felt like a mistake.

But by the third day, something shifted. We started to remember who we were before we became "mom and dad." We talked about things that had nothing to do with school schedules or allergies. We slept in. We took a cooking class in Barcelona and got lost in a narrow street in Cinque Terre without panicking about nap times.

The hardest part was not the guilt. It was the silence. But that silence gave us room to breathe. Meanwhile, the kids were having their own adventure, learning to make friends and solve problems without us. When we picked them up, they were taller, tanner, and full of stories. We had stories too. For the first time in years, we all had something new to share with each other. It took a week apart to make us a closer family.
