There are many ways to parent a child well, but ignoring misbehavior is not one of them. A retail worker recently shared two encounters with parents at a sporting goods store that left a lasting impression, offering a refreshing contrast to the usual tales of entitled customers and unchecked tantrums.
The first moment involved a young boy who clearly wanted a basketball. Instead of buying it, his father knelt down and calmly explained that they had come for a specific item and that was all they were getting. The boy started to whine, his voice rising. The father did not give in, nor did he yell. He simply waited, maintaining eye contact, until the boy stopped. Then he said, "I know you are disappointed, but we are sticking to the plan." The employee noted that the child walked away without the ball and without a scene.
The second incident was even simpler. A mother was shopping with a toddler who began throwing a small fit because he could not have a candy bar at the register. The mother did not hand over a phone or a snack to pacify him. She picked him up, walked him outside the store, and stood there for two minutes until he calmed down. When they came back in, she said, "We try again." The child was quiet for the rest of the trip.
The employee said these moments stood out because they were rare. In a world where parents often negotiate, bribe, or ignore bad behavior to avoid public embarrassment, these two parents chose the harder path. They taught their kids that no means no, and that feelings of disappointment are okay. It was a small reminder that effective parenting often happens in the quiet, unglamorous moments of everyday life.
