Two Dads, Unequal Road: Gay Men Face Barriers to Parenthood in Canada

Two Dads, Unequal Road: Gay Men Face Barriers to Parenthood in Canada

Canada has legally guaranteed gay men the same parenting rights as heterosexual couples, but the reality of building a family looks very different. For many gay men, becoming a father involves navigating a maze of expensive, uncertain and emotionally draining pathways that straight couples rarely have to think about.

The legal framework is clear. Same-sex couples can adopt, use surrogacy and access fertility treatments. But the gap between rights on paper and real access is wide. Adoption agencies often prioritize heterosexual couples or single women. International surrogacy is complicated by different laws across countries, and domestic surrogacy remains rare and costly. A typical surrogacy arrangement can cost between $60,000 and $100,000, putting it out of reach for most.

Fertility clinics also present hurdles. Many require gay men to prove they have tried less invasive options first, or they impose waiting periods. Some clinics have limited experience working with two-father families, leading to assumptions or missteps.

The result is a significant gap in parenthood rates. Studies show that lesbian couples become parents at much higher rates than gay male couples, largely because of lower biological and financial barriers. Gay men who want children often spend years saving money, searching for an egg donor and a surrogate, and navigating legal contracts.

Advocates argue that Canada's system still treats gay fatherhood as an exception rather than a normal family-building path. Until the process becomes simpler and more affordable, equal rights will not mean equal access to parenthood.
