Social psychologist and New York University professor Jonathan Haidt is urging parents to tackle children's phone habits, and the numbers he cites make a strong case for action. His argument centers on a simple but uncomfortable truth: the devices we carry everywhere are reshaping childhood, attention, and mental health in ways that are hard to ignore.
Haidt points to rising rates of anxiety and depression among teenagers, especially since smartphones and social media became ubiquitous around 2012. He notes that sleep deprivation, fragmented attention, and constant social comparison have become normal parts of growing up. The average young person now spends hours each day scrolling, often late into the night, which leaves little room for real world friendships, physical play, or quiet reflection.
For parents, the advice is direct. Delay giving children smartphones. Keep social media out of the early teen years. Protect sleep by keeping devices out of bedrooms. Model better habits at home, because children notice what adults do far more than what they say.
None of this requires perfection. It requires intention. Small changes, made consistently, can restore focus and improve well being for the whole family. The numbers are staggering, but the response does not have to be complicated. Put the phone down, look up, and start there.
