Tech executives have apparently decided that the next frontier for artificial intelligence is telling parents how to raise their children. It seems we have reached a point where AI has become so useless at solving actual problems that it is now inventing new ones just to fix them. The latest offering from the Silicon Valley set is the suggestion that we should use ChatGPT to help with parenting decisions, from discipline strategies to bedtime routines.
There is something deeply tragic about this development. The idea that a language model trained on internet forums and self-help blogs could offer better guidance than a grandmother, a pediatrician, or even just common sense is laughable. But here we are, watching tech bros with no children of their own confidently explain that the solution to a toddler's tantrum is a carefully crafted prompt.
The real problem is that this advice treats parenting like a coding bug. It assumes that if you just input the right data, you will get the correct output. But children are not machines. They are messy, irrational, and wonderfully unpredictable. No algorithm can replicate the intuition that comes from actually knowing a child, or the love that guides a parent's decision in a split second.
Perhaps the most annoying part is the condescension. The implication is that parents are too dumb to figure things out on their own, so they need a chatbot to hold their hand. It is a solution in search of a problem, and it is making everyone dumber for having to listen to it.
