Mental health is an intrinsic part of a child's development. However, for many parents, having conversations about mental wellbeing only arises after a difficult or disruptive behaviour occurs, or there are repercussions at school or with peers. Waiting for a crisis to force the discussion leaves families reacting instead of preparing.
Children often lack the vocabulary to describe what they are feeling. They may show distress through changes in sleep, appetite, or energy. Some withdraw from friends and activities they once enjoyed. Others become irritable, aggressive, or unusually quiet. A drop in school performance, frequent headaches or stomach aches without a medical cause, and expressions of hopelessness or worthlessness are signals that should never be ignored.
Parents do not need to be therapists. They need to be present. Asking simple questions, listening without judgment, and validating emotions can make a child feel safe enough to share what is happening. Regular check-ins, even brief ones, build trust over time.
Normalizing conversations about emotions helps children understand that sadness, anxiety, and anger are manageable and not shameful. When parents address mental health early, they reduce the risk of escalation and teach children that asking for help is a strength, not a failure.
