Study Finds Listing Motherhood on a Resume Can Boost Hiring Chances

Study Finds Listing Motherhood on a Resume Can Boost Hiring Chances

A new study suggests that mentioning parenting experience on a job application may actually improve a candidate's odds of getting hired, challenging long-standing assumptions about bias against mothers in the workplace.

Researchers found that recruiters and hiring managers often view motherhood as a signal of valuable skills rather than a liability. Attributes such as time management, patience, multitasking, and conflict resolution appeared to carry weight when evaluating applicants.

"We found that this long-held established presumption of a motherhood penalty no longer held up," said the researcher.

The findings mark a shift from earlier studies that suggested mothers faced lower callback rates and were perceived as less committed to their careers. According to the new research, changing workplace norms and a tighter labor market may be reshaping how employers assess caregiving experience.

Participants in the study reviewed fictional resumes with and without references to parenting. Those that included such details were rated higher on dependability and organizational ability. The effect was strongest for roles requiring strong interpersonal skills.

The researcher cautioned that results may vary by industry and region, and that bias has not disappeared entirely. Still, the study offers a more optimistic view for parents returning to work after time away. It also suggests that candidates should not hide caregiving roles, since they can demonstrate real and transferable strengths.
