A recent social media post from an obstetrician and gynecologist has sparked conversation among new parents about a routine task many assume they have mastered. The message suggests that common diaper changing habits may not be as effective as believed.

According to the guidance shared, proper diapering involves more than simply securing the tabs and checking for leaks. Position matters. Placing the diaper too high or too low can lead to discomfort, skin irritation, and frequent blowouts. The back of the diaper should sit snugly around the waist without riding up, while the front should rest below the umbilical cord stump in newborns to avoid friction and infection risk.

Parents are also advised to avoid pulling the leg cuffs outward. Instead, these edges should be tucked inward to create a proper seal. This small adjustment can prevent leaks that many families blame on the diaper itself.

Another point raised is frequency. Waiting for visible saturation is not ideal. Newborns should be changed every two to three hours, and immediately after any bowel movement, to reduce the risk of diaper rash and urinary tract issues.
