Psychiatrist Warns Against Sending Teens to College Too Early

A psychiatrist is urging parents to reconsider the common practice of sending children away to college right after high school, arguing that many teenagers are not neurologically ready for the transition.

The warning centers on the idea that the adolescent brain is still under construction well into the early twenties. The prefrontal cortex, which governs planning, impulse control and long term decision making, matures last. Sending young people into an environment with little structure, easy access to alcohol and drugs, and heavy academic pressure can overwhelm a system that has not fully developed.

The argument goes beyond academics. Sleep schedules collapse, anxiety rises, and many students struggle without the daily scaffolding a family home provides. The result, according to this view, is that large numbers of young adults end up stressed, isolated or derailed during their first years away.

Parents are being encouraged to look at alternatives. These include living at home while attending a local school, taking a gap year with a job or volunteer work, or starting with a lighter course load. The point is not to hold children back, but to match expectations with where their brains actually are.

Critics of the college timeline say the pressure to leave home at eighteen is cultural rather than scientific. Families who delay or adjust the plan may see better outcomes in mental health, grades and long term stability.
