Zara Tindall has offered a rare glimpse into her upbringing at Gatcombe Park, describing how her father, Captain Mark Phillips, approached parenting with a firm and structured mindset. Speaking on the Talk Horse podcast, the daughter of Princess Anne reflected on the family dynamic she experienced while growing up in the Gloucestershire countryside.
Zara explained that her father was a demanding figure who placed great importance on discipline, hard work, and responsibility. She noted that his approach could be described as critical, though she framed it as a product of his own background and his desire to prepare his children for life. According to Zara, Mark Phillips believed in setting high standards and expected his daughters to meet them, particularly when it came to their equestrian pursuits.
The conversation also touched on the balance between her parents' differing personalities. While Princess Anne was known for her no-nonsense attitude, Mark Phillips brought a more direct and exacting style to the household. Zara suggested that this combination shaped both her and her brother Peter Phillips into resilient adults.
Zara, an accomplished equestrian and Olympic medalist, credited much of her success to the environment she grew up in. She described Gatcombe as a place where hard work was normal and where achievement was earned rather than given. The podcast appearance marked one of the few times she has spoken publicly about her parents' marriage and their shared approach to raising children.
