NEW YORK CITY - As temperatures rise and school lets out, families are heading outdoors for summer activities. But with the fun comes the need for vigilance, especially when it comes to children. Toy safety expert Joan Lawrence recently shared practical advice for keeping kids safe while they enjoy the sunshine.
Lawrence emphasized that supervision is the most critical factor. Whether kids are playing in the backyard, at the park, or near a pool, an adult should always be watching. She noted that distractions like phones can easily pull attention away, so it is important to stay focused.
For water safety, Lawrence recommended that children wear life jackets that fit properly, even if they know how to swim. She also warned about the dangers of inflatable toys, which can deflate or drift away from shore. On the playground, parents should check for hot surfaces like metal slides and rubber mats, which can burn skin on a scorching day.
Sun protection is another key point. Lawrence advised applying sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapplying every two hours, and dressing kids in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and wide-brimmed hats. She also reminded parents to keep children hydrated with water, not sugary drinks.
Finally, Lawrence stressed the importance of teaching kids basic safety rules, like staying within sight and not talking to strangers. With a little planning and attention, summer can be both safe and memorable for the whole family.
