Parenting a Teen With Suicidal Thoughts: The Hidden Challenges

Parenting a Teen With Suicidal Thoughts: The Hidden Challenges

Roshni Parbhoo-Seetha says parents should approach conversations about their children's wellbeing with genuine attention and openness. The warning comes as Suicide Prevention Month places a spotlight on families navigating one of the most difficult experiences a household can face.

Parenting a teenager who expresses suicidal thoughts carries a weight that many caregivers describe as isolating. Fear of saying the wrong thing often pushes parents into silence, while the urge to fix everything quickly can shut down the honesty a child needs to share. Parbhoo-Seetha notes that listening without judgment matters more than having perfect answers ready.

Teens may withdraw, lash out, or mask their pain behind ordinary routines, which makes subtle changes in mood, sleep, and appetite worth noticing. Parents are encouraged to ask direct questions about suicide rather than avoiding the subject out of fear. Research consistently shows that asking does not plant the idea. It can instead open a door.

Caregivers also need support of their own. Guilt, exhaustion, and helplessness are common, and carrying those feelings alone can make it harder to stay present for a struggling child. Professional counseling, support groups, and honest conversations with trusted people can ease that burden.

The message for families is clear. Connection, patience, and professional help can protect a young life, and no parent has to face this alone.
