Parental Challenges And Stress Impact Bible Engagement

Parental Challenges And Stress Impact Bible Engagement

Parents express a desire to engage with Scripture, but daily pressures like work-life balance, exhaustion, and financial concerns often get in the way. That is the key finding from the American Bible Society's latest release of its 2026 State of the Bible report.

The study reveals a significant gap between intention and action among parents. While many say they value spiritual practices and want to read the Bible more, they report feeling overwhelmed by the demands of raising children, managing careers, and keeping up with household responsibilities. Fatigue after long days and the constant worry about providing for the family leave little energy for personal devotion.

Researchers noted that this stress creates a cycle. The more parents feel stretched, the less they engage with Scripture, even though they believe it could offer comfort and guidance. The report suggests that churches and faith communities need to acknowledge these real-world obstacles rather than simply urging parents to "try harder."

The findings point to a need for practical support, such as shorter, accessible reading plans or integrating Bible discussion into family routines. Without addressing the underlying stressors, the report warns, many parents will continue to feel disconnected from their faith practices, even when their desire to connect remains strong.
