Small, motorized minibikes are becoming a growing headache for police and residents in several Nebraska communities. Officers say they are fielding an increasing number of calls about children and teenagers racing these compact bikes through streets, alleys, and sidewalks, often at high speeds and without any safety gear.
The trend has left neighbors frustrated over noise and safety concerns, while law enforcement struggles to find a solution. In many cases, the riders are under the legal age to operate a motor vehicle, and the bikes themselves may not meet state requirements for street-legal operation. Police warn that the situation is dangerous for both the young riders and drivers who may not see them coming around a blind corner.
One officer noted that while the department can issue citations or impound the bikes, the real solution starts at home. "No city policy can replace active parenting," he said. Authorities are urging parents to know where their children are riding and to ensure they understand traffic laws. The message from police is clear: a minibike is not a toy, and the consequences of a crash can be life-altering.
