I Sent My Kids to College Before Teaching Them Three Important Life Lessons

I Sent My Kids to College Before Teaching Them Three Important Life Lessons

When my oldest child left for college, I felt confident in the preparation we had done. We toured campuses, bought supplies, and talked through schedules. What I did not realize until later was that I had overlooked three basic skills that matter more than any packing list.

The first was cleaning. My kids could tidy a room when asked, but they did not know how to actually maintain a living space. They had never scrubbed a bathroom, done a full load of laundry from start to finish, or learned how quickly a small mess becomes a big one when nobody deals with it. In a dorm, that responsibility lands entirely on them.

The second was money. We talked about budgets in theory, but I never showed them how to track spending, read a bank statement, or say no to small purchases that add up fast. Within weeks, one of them was surprised by how little remained from a part-time job paycheck.

The third was self-care. I mean the unglamorous kind: sleeping on a reasonable schedule, eating something other than snacks, and asking for help when stress builds up. I assumed these habits would carry over. They did not.

None of these lessons require a formal curriculum. They require small, repeated practice at home before the stakes get higher. I learned that too late, but other parents still have time.
