For mothers who choose to raise a child on their own, the financial pressure is relentless. There is no spare adult to cover a sick day, no second income to absorb rising rent, and no partner to split the cost of school supplies. Every expense lands on one budget. Every emergency becomes a crisis.

The problem is not just about money. It is about time. Single parents cannot work overtime without paying for extra childcare. They cannot attend a job interview without finding someone to watch the kids. The system offers little flexibility for people who have no backup at home.

Advocates argue that policy settings need to catch up. Tax offsets, childcare subsidies, and crisis support are often designed around two-parent families. Adjusting those rules would not be a luxury.
