Doctors Warn Parents About Caffeine in Popular Energy Drinks

Doctors Warn Parents About Caffeine in Popular Energy Drinks

Doctors are urging families to look past energy drinks' sports branding and take the caffeine inside seriously, as a college sponsorship deal has put these beverages back in the spotlight. The drinks often carry images of athletes and extreme sports, which can make them seem like a normal part of an active lifestyle. In reality, many contain caffeine levels that rival or exceed a cup of coffee, and that can be a problem for young people.

Pediatricians say children and teenagers are more sensitive to caffeine than adults. Too much can cause a racing heart, high blood pressure, trouble sleeping, anxiety, and stomach pain. In some cases, it can lead to emergency room visits, especially when drinks are combined with intense exercise or other stimulants.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has long advised that children and teens avoid energy drinks entirely. Sports drinks, which contain electrolytes and sugar, are a different product and are not the same as energy drinks. Parents should read labels carefully, because caffeine can hide behind names like guarana and taurine.

Experts suggest talking with kids about why they want the drinks and offering water, milk, or diluted juice instead. Setting a clear rule at home can help, and so can keeping these products out of the refrigerator.
