DEAR HARRIETTE: Recently, my mother opened up to me in a way I never expected. She confessed that she never truly enjoyed being a mother. This revelation struck me hard, especially considering that I am now 45 years old. I had always assumed that her love for me was unconditional and that motherhood brought her joy.
Her honesty has left me feeling a mix of emotions—sadness, confusion, and even a sense of betrayal. I understand that parenting can be incredibly challenging, and perhaps she felt overwhelmed by the responsibilities that came with raising a child. However, hearing her say that she didn’t find fulfillment in it has made me question our relationship and the experiences we shared.
I want to support her, but I also need to process my feelings. How do I reconcile this new perspective on my childhood with the love I know she has for me? This confession has opened a dialogue that I never anticipated, and I’m unsure how to navigate it.
