In fact, if people overheard a parent admitting they would not allow it, they might call the police for a wellness check. The contrast is stark.

Consider co-sleeping. While many American experts warn against it, a large portion of the world sees family beds as the norm. In Sweden, parents routinely leave sleeping babies in strollers outside cafes, even in freezing weather, trusting that fresh air is the best medicine. In Spain, children stay up late, joining family dinners at 10 PM, which would shock most US parents who enforce a 7:30 bedtime. These practices are not careless. They are deeply rooted in cultural values about trust, community, and resilience. For an American observer, they can seem risky or even neglectful. But to the parents who live them, they are simply the right way to raise a child. The real question is not which method is better, but how much of our own parenting is habit rather than wisdom.
